Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

Do you have trouble clearly seeing objects that are close to you? If so, you may have hyperopia, also known as farsightedness. At Campus Eye Group, our eye care specialists are highly skilled in diagnosing and treating this refractive error so you can see clearer.

What is Hyperopia?

An individual who enjoys relatively clear vision at a far distance yet experiences up close vision as blurry is suffering from a condition known as Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness. Hyperopia is usually a condition that is inherited. About one in every four individuals experiences this condition, caused by a refractive error in focusing the eyes. Light passing through the eye’s cornea and lens tends to be focused behind rather than directly on the retina. This is due to the ocular axis of the eye being too short or the focusing power of the cornea being too weak.

Although most children begin life being hyperopic, they don’t experience blurry vision because their eyes can bend entering light rays to accommodate proper focusing onto the retina. The symptoms of hyperopia tend to decrease as the eye grows and lengthens.

Diagnosing Hyperopia

Hyperopia can be diagnosed with a basic eye exam. Your ophthalmologist or optometrist will dilate your eyes, allowing them to see the back of your eye. They will also check for refractive errors and other conditions. If hyperopia is diagnosed, you will be provided with a selection of treatment options.

Hyperopia Treatment

Hyperopia treatments are available at Campus Eye Group. Each case of hyperopia is different and may respond to one of several different treatments to correct the vision:

Corrective Lenses

Hyperopia can be corrected with the right prescription lenses. Whether you choose eyeglasses or contact lenses, your eye doctor can find the right amount of correction for your vision during an exam. Depending on your vision, you may need to wear them all the time or only while performing tasks like driving or watching a movie.

Corrective Surgery

Hyperopia may also be corrected through surgery. There are a variety of surgical options available depending on the degree of hyperopia. For those with lower degrees of hyperopia, LASIK may be an option. However, those with higher degrees of hyperopia may benefit from refractive lens exchange.
