Eyelid Conditions

The eyelids help protect the eyes and keep them hydrated and healthy. However, like any other part of the body, the eyelids can be affected by different conditions or problems. While most eyelid issues are not serious, it is important to see a doctor if you are concerned with any of your symptoms.

What are Eyelid Conditions?

Eyelid conditions may include any type of inflammation, infection, benign or malignant tumors, or structural problems. While most eyelid conditions are not dangerous, they may cause uncomfortable symptoms and require treatment.

Some of the most common eyelid conditions treated at Campus Eye Group include, but are not limited to:

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an eyelid condition that causes inflammation, redness, swelling, and itchiness. It can also cause dandruff-like flakes on the eyelashes or crusting of the eyelids. Treatment often includes applying warm compresses, cleaning the eyelids, and applying antibiotic ointment.

Blepharospasm

Blepharospasm is an involuntary spasm of the eyelid muscle that results in repetitive blinking, twitching, or fluttering. There are different types of blepharospasm, including beginning essential blepharospasm and hemifacial blepharospasm. Treatment may include medication or surgery.

Chalazion

A chalazion is a bump that forms beneath the skin of the eyelids. It occurs when an oil gland becomes blocked. When a chalazion first forms it may be painful, though discomfort quickly goes away. As it grows, it may become red, tender, or swollen. Treatment often involves warm compresses and good hygiene. If a chalazion does not go away, it may need to be drained by your provider.

Ectropion

Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns outward. This exposes the inner eyelid and can result in dryness, redness, and irritation. Treatment may include eye drops, ointments, or surgery.

Entropion

Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns toward the eye. This can cause the eyelashes and skin to rub against the eyeball, causing discomfort. Treatment may involve eye drops, steroid cream, or surgery.

Styes

A stye is a red, sensitive bump that grows on the edge of the eyelid. Styes are the result of a bacterial infection of an oil land, sweat gland, or hair follicle. Treatment may include warm compresses, antibiotics, or drainage.

Xanthelasma

A xanthelasma is a harmless yellow bump located on or near your eyelid. They form when cholesterol deposits build up under the skin. Having xanthelasma may be a sign of other conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes, or thyroid issues. Treatment includes removal through surgery, liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, or laser surgery.

Diagnosing Eyelid Conditions

A comprehensive eye exam can provide the information needed to accurately diagnose an eyelid condition. Your eye care provider will examine your eyelids, looking for signs of drooping, retraction problems, lesions, excessive tearing, and more. A plan of treatment will then be created to ensure the resolution of the issue.

Treatment for Eyelid Conditions

Treatment of eyelid conditions relies on an accurate diagnosis. Treatments may vary depending on the condition; your doctor will inform you on how to treat your specific issue properly.  If you are interested in discussing treatment for your eyelid condition or problem, please contact Campus Eye Group today.
