Specialty Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are extremely common among men and women, as they provide clearer vision without the need for eyeglasses. However, depending on their eye health and conditions, some people may require specialty contact lenses. At Campus Eye Group, our professional staff is comprised of both board-certified ophthalmologists and certified optometrists who deliver the highest quality of eye care to help you achieve clearer vision.

What are Specialty Contact Lenses?

Specialty contact lenses are custom-made to address specific eye conditions or preferences. They differ from traditional contact lenses because they are designed to improve vision and treat certain eye conditions such as keratoconus, post-surgical complications, severe dry eyes, and more.

Specialty contact lenses offer many benefits, including:

  • Customized to fit your eye or vision correction needs.
  • Address vision and comfort issues.
  • Can provide superior vision correction compared to standard lenses.

At Campus Eye Group, we offer the following specialty contact lenses.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contact lenses are larger and cover more of the eye’s surface than traditional contact lenses. They extend beyond the cornea and cover parts of the white part of the eye. Scleral lenses are rigid gas-permeable lenses, meaning that they hold their shape but still allow oxygen to pass through them.

Scleral lenses may be prescribed for many different diseases or eye conditions, such as corneal diseases, severe refractive errors, eye surface conditions, severe dry eye, and more.

Soft and Rigid Gas Permeable

Soft contact lenses are thin, flexible discs that are created with plastic. They are the most common type of contact lenses used in the United States.

Rigid gas permeable contact lenses, also sometimes called Ortho-K lenses, are hard contact lenses made up of silicone but still allow oxygen to pass through them. They are known to be great for maintaining good eye health and provide crisper vision than other types of contact. These contacts may be prescribed for those with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid contact lenses are a combination of hard, gas-permeable lenses in the center and soft lenses around the edge. Hybrid lenses may be a good choice for those who desire better vision than soft lenses can provide alone but desire the comfort of soft lenses.

Dr. Joshi and her team provided a great first optometrist visit for my 6 yo. Front desk staff were responsive and helpful from booking to reception and were friendly and communicative throughout our exam. Dr. Joshi herself was warm, patient, explained things clearly and asked several times if we had any questions- she clearly cares about her patients well-being.
We’ve seen Dr. Lavrich as well and she’s not only an outstanding surgeon but a kind and compassionate practitioner. I trust this practice with my family’s care. Thank you!
