Contact Lens Fittings

Contact lenses are an extremely popular option for those with refractive errors. In fact, about 45 million people in the US alone wear contact lenses. If you are considering contact lenses to improve your vision, the team at Campus Eye Group can help. Our professional staff is comprised of both board-certified ophthalmologists and therapeutically certified optometrists who deliver the highest quality eye care.

What are Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are thin, transparent plastic disks worn in the eye to improve vision. Similar to eyeglasses, contact lenses correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), distorted vision (astigmatism), and changes to near vision that occur with age (presbyopia).

Contact lenses can be made up of different types of plastic, though the most common types include soft lenses and hard lenses.

Soft Contact Lenses

These are the most common types of contact lenses, as they tend to be more comfortable. There are various types of soft contact lenses, including daily-wear contacts, extended-wear contacts, colored contact lenses, and more.

Hard Contact Lenses

The most common type of hard contact lens is the rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens. It holds its shape firmly while allowing oxygen to flow to the eye. RGP lenses are specifically helpful for those with astigmatism and keratoconus.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Fitting

The first step toward a contact lens prescription is a comprehensive eye exam. During this time, your optometrist or ophthalmologist will determine your prescription and ensure that your eyes are healthy enough to wear contacts. Then, a contact lens fitting will take place.

During a contact lens fitting, measurements of your eye will be taken. A measurement will be taken to check the curve and diameter you will need in your lenses, as well as a measurement of your pupil and iris. Your doctor will also test to ensure that your eyes make enough tears to keep contacts moist through a tear film evaluation.

Once measurements are taken, you will try a few different pairs of contact lenses to ensure the correct fit. If you are a first-time contact lens wearer, you will be shown how to properly put in and take out your contacts. You will also be given detailed information on how to properly care for your lenses. Initially, you will be sent home with a trial pair of lenses for a few days, after which you will return for a follow-up appointment to ensure that your eyes have properly adjusted to the lenses.
