While nearly everyone experiences some sort of eye dryness at some point in their lives, sometimes this condition can become chronic or impact an individual’s daily life. If you are bothered by extremely dry eyes or believe you may have dry eye syndrome, our team of eye care specialists at Campus Eye Group can help.
What is Dry Eye?
Normally, our eyes constantly create tears to keep them moist. Dry eye is a condition that occurs when the tears in the eye cannot provide adequate lubrication, either because the eyes do not produce enough tears or do not make the right type of tears or tear film. Tears are needed to keep our eyes healthy and comfortable.
Common symptoms of dry eye include:
- Burning or stinging eyes
- Blurry vision
- A gritty feeling in the eye
- Red or irritated eyes
- Pain when wearing contact lenses
- Overproduction of tears in the eyes due to dryness
Treatment Options for Dry Eye
At Campus Eye Group, we provide a variety of dry eye treatment options to help you feel more comfortable and see more clearly. These may include:
Eye Drops
There are many different types of eye drops that may be recommended to help temporarily relieve your dry eye symptoms.
Artificial tear eye drops are often found over the counter and may be used to lubricate and soothe your eyes. They can work in one of two ways: by adding to the aqueous part of your tears or to the lipid part of your tears. You can discuss the best choice for you with your ophthalmologist.
Other eye drops may treat inflammation in your tear glands or increase tear production.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are small devices that are used to slow or stop tear fluid drainage, preventing dry eyes. They are inserted into the puncta, or the small opening that drains tear fluid from the eyes. There are various types of punctal plugs, including temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent. There are also medicated plugs or perforated plugs, which have a hollow center to slow fluid drainage.
Our team of eye care professionals at Campus Eye Group will work with you to determine the best dry eye treatment option for relief from uncomfortable symptoms.
